Vocal Music Education

The purpose of the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Education is to prepare the student for a professional career in teaching vocal music in a group setting. Music Education students gain practical teaching experience in the field as early as the first year.  The program produces highly desired and competitive graduates, with a 100% placement rate.  OCU alumni have been celebrated as district, state, and OKMEA teachers of the year and attained distinction for pedagogical excellence.

  • 2006 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year: Robyn Hilger
  • 2014 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year: Peter Markes
  • 2018 OKMEA Hall of Fame Award: Anne B. Guevara
  • 2026 OKMEA Hall of Fame Award: Susan Clothier
  • 2026 Kansas Teacher of the Year: Rachel Marlow

Music education studies are boosted by OCU's Collegiate National Association for Music Education (CNAfME) chapter. Through CNAfME, OCU Music Education students are able to network with working professionals, meet special guest speakers, and receive annual assistance to attend Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OKMEA) and Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) conferences. Graduates of the program have 100% pass rate on the Oklahoma Teacher Certification Exams and 100% placement rate for those who were actively seeking teaching positions. Those not seeking positions have been accepted into graduate programs. Students have accepted positions throughout the U.S., Europe, and South Korea.

Vocal Music Education students have the opportunity for music teaching and conducting experiences outside of the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ classroom through a variety of means. Students teach private lessons in the schools and through the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ Performing Arts Academy. Students are hired or volunteer as sectional coaches for school ensembles, as well as for the Canterbury Voices adult and youth ensembles that rehearse in the Bass Center. Students have leadership opportunities in our Collegiate National Association for Music Education (CNAfME) chapter.
